When Heartburn Keeps Coming Back, Look Beyond the Antacids

Most people experience heartburn from time to time. A rich meal, a late dinner, or a few extra cups of coffee can leave you with an uncomfortable burning sensation behind the breastbone. But if heartburn keeps returning, relying on antacids without investigating the cause may not be the best approach.
Heartburn happens when stomach acid moves back up into the oesophagus, the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. When this happens regularly, it may be a sign of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GORD.
The symptoms aren’t always limited to a burning feeling in your chest. You might also experience a sour taste in your mouth, frequent burping, a persistent cough, a hoarse voice, or discomfort that’s worse when lying down.
Certain habits can make reflux more likely. Large meals, eating shortly before bed, alcohol, smoking, and being overweight can all contribute for some people. Individual triggers vary, so keeping track of when your symptoms occur can help identify patterns.
Try leaving a few hours between your evening meal and going to bed. Eating smaller meals and avoiding foods that consistently trigger your symptoms may also help. If symptoms occur at night, raising the head of your bed can sometimes reduce reflux.
If you’re regularly experiencing heartburn, speak with your GP or pharmacist. They can help determine whether lifestyle changes, medication, or further investigation is appropriate. Don’t assume that persistent symptoms are simply something you need to manage indefinitely.
Chest discomfort should never automatically be assumed to be heartburn. If you experience sudden or severe chest pain, particularly alongside shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to your arm, jaw, or back, seek urgent medical attention.
Occasional heartburn is common. Heartburn that keeps coming back is a different story. Finding out what’s causing it can help you protect your digestive health and enjoy meals without constantly anticipating the discomfort afterwards.
