Bones may feel solid and unchanging, but they’re living tissue that continues to change throughout our lives.

As we get older, bone density can gradually decrease. When bones become weaker and more fragile, a condition called osteoporosis can develop. The tricky part is that osteoporosis often has no obvious symptoms until a fracture occurs.

This is why bone health deserves attention even when you feel perfectly well. Certain factors can increase the risk, including age, family history, low body weight, smoking, heavy alcohol use, and some medications or medical conditions. Women are also at greater risk after menopause because of changes in oestrogen levels.

Strong bones need several things to stay healthy. Calcium is important, but it’s only part of the picture. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, while regular weight-bearing and resistance exercise can help maintain bone strength and muscle function.

Your diet can provide calcium through foods such as dairy products, leafy green vegetables, canned fish with edible bones, and calcium-fortified alternatives. If you’re concerned that you’re not getting enough nutrients, speak with your GP or a registered dietitian before starting supplements.

It’s also worth discussing your personal risk of osteoporosis with your healthcare provider. Depending on your age, medical history, and other risk factors, they may recommend a bone density scan or other assessment.

Looking after your bones isn’t simply about preventing fractures. Healthy bones support mobility, independence, and the ability to keep doing the activities you enjoy. You may not be able to feel your bones becoming weaker, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to protect them.
