Breakfast Still Deserves a Place on Your Table

It’s easy to skip breakfast, especially if you’re not feeling hungry first thing in the morning. Some people head straight for a cup of coffee, while others simply get busy and forget to eat until lunchtime. Although everyone’s routine is different, starting the day with a balanced breakfast can provide the energy and nutrients your body needs after a night’s sleep.
A nourishing breakfast doesn’t have to be elaborate. Porridge topped with fruit, wholegrain toast with eggs, Greek yoghurt with berries, or baked beans on toast are all satisfying options that provide a mix of protein, fibre, and slow-release carbohydrates. These foods help keep you feeling fuller for longer and provide a steady source of energy throughout the morning.
If your appetite is small, try eating a lighter breakfast rather than skipping it altogether. A piece of fruit with yoghurt or a slice of wholegrain toast may be enough to get you started. You can always have a healthy snack later if you become hungry.
Breakfast is also an ideal opportunity to include nutrients that support healthy ageing. Dairy foods provide calcium for bone health, while wholegrains and fruit contribute fibre, which helps support digestion. Adding a source of protein can also help maintain muscle strength as you get older.
If you take medication in the morning, eating breakfast may also reduce the chance of stomach discomfort for medicines that are best taken with food. Always follow the advice provided by your GP or pharmacist regarding when to take your medication.
Of course, there isn’t one breakfast that suits everyone. The important thing is choosing foods that you enjoy and that leave you feeling satisfied and ready for the day ahead. Giving breakfast a little more attention can help you fuel your body, support your health, and start each day on the right foot.
