Many people notice their appetite changes as they get older. You may not feel as hungry as you once did, or you might find yourself skipping meals simply because you don’t feel like cooking. While it’s natural for eating habits to evolve over time, regularly eating too little can make it harder for your body to get the nutrients it needs.

A reduced appetite can have many causes. Changes in taste and smell, certain medications, dental problems, illness, or living alone can all affect how much you eat. If you’ve recently noticed a significant change, it’s worth mentioning it to your GP, especially if you’re also losing weight without trying.

When your appetite is smaller, focus on making each meal count. Choose foods that are rich in nutrients, such as eggs, yoghurt, fish, lean meat, beans, wholegrains, fruit, and vegetables. Rather than eating three large meals, you may find it easier to have smaller meals or nutritious snacks throughout the day.

Eating with others can also make a difference. Sharing a meal with family, friends, or neighbours often turns eating into a social occasion, making it more enjoyable and encouraging you to eat a little more than you would on your own.

Keep a few healthy, easy-to-prepare options on hand for days when you don’t feel like cooking. Soup, frozen vegetables, canned tuna, baked beans, pre-cut salad, and wholegrain bread can help you put together a nourishing meal in just a few minutes.

If eating has become difficult because of chewing, swallowing, or ongoing digestive problems, don’t ignore it. Your GP, dentist, or an accredited dietitian can help identify the cause and recommend practical solutions.

Even when your appetite is smaller, making thoughtful food choices can help you maintain your strength, energy, and independence.
