Most headaches are nothing to worry about. They can be triggered by stress, dehydration, poor sleep, or even spending too long looking at a screen. But if headaches are becoming more frequent, more severe, or feel different from those you’ve had before, it’s worth finding out what’s causing them.

Start by paying attention to when they occur. Do they usually appear in the afternoon? After missing a meal? Following a restless night’s sleep? Keeping a simple diary of your symptoms can help you identify patterns and give your GP valuable information if you need an appointment.

Several everyday habits may contribute to headaches. Not drinking enough water, skipping meals, drinking too much caffeine, or spending long periods with poor posture can all play a role. In some cases, headaches may also be linked to medication side effects, vision problems, or underlying health conditions that require treatment.

If you haven’t had your eyes checked for a while, consider booking an appointment with your optometrist. An outdated glasses prescription or uncorrected vision problem can sometimes cause eye strain and recurring headaches, particularly when reading or using digital devices.

Over-the-counter pain relief may help from time to time, but relying on it too often isn’t recommended. Frequent use of some pain medicines can actually lead to more headaches over time. If you find yourself taking them regularly, speak with your GP or pharmacist about the best approach.

Seek medical attention promptly if you experience a sudden, severe headache unlike anything you’ve had before, or if your headache is accompanied by confusion, weakness, difficulty speaking, changes in vision, fever, or a stiff neck. These symptoms require urgent assessment.

Headaches shouldn’t become something you simply learn to live with. Understanding what’s causing them is often the first step towards effective treatment.
