Pay Attention to Unexplained Weight Loss

Losing weight without trying might sound like good news. But if the number on the scales is dropping and you haven’t changed your diet or exercise routine, it’s worth finding out why. Unintentional weight loss isn’t always serious, but it shouldn’t be ignored, particularly as we get older.
There are many possible reasons for unexpected weight loss. Changes in appetite, dental problems, difficulty swallowing, medication side effects, thyroid conditions, digestive disorders, and ongoing infections can all play a part. In some cases, it may be an early sign of a more serious health condition that needs medical attention.
Think about whether anything else has changed. Are your clothes becoming looser? Have you been feeling more tired than usual? Are you eating less because food doesn’t taste the same, or because cooking has become more difficult? These details can help your GP identify the underlying cause.
Keeping a simple record of your weight can also be helpful. You don’t need to weigh yourself every day, but checking every month or so can make it easier to notice gradual changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. If you experience a significant drop over a short period, arrange a medical appointment rather than waiting to see if it improves on its own.
Maintaining good nutrition becomes increasingly important with age. Try to include a source of protein with each meal, eat a variety of fruit and vegetables, and don’t skip meals if your appetite is lower than usual. If cooking for one has become difficult, consider preparing larger meals to freeze or sharing meals with family and friends.
Most importantly, don’t assume that weight loss is simply part of getting older. While our bodies naturally change with age, unexplained weight loss deserves proper assessment so any underlying issues can be identified and treated early.
Your weight is only one measure of your health. But when it changes unexpectedly, it’s your body’s way of asking for a closer look.
