Most of us have at least one spare key tucked away somewhere. It might be in a kitchen drawer, a garage, or hidden in a place that seemed like a good idea years ago. While keeping a spare key is sensible, taking a few minutes to organise and label your keys can save time and prevent unnecessary stress.

Start by gathering every spare key you can find. You may discover keys for doors, windows, padlocks, old sheds, or even homes and vehicles you no longer own. If you can’t remember what a key is for, now is the perfect time to find out.

Once you’ve identified each one, label it clearly. Avoid writing your address or any personal information on keys that could be lost outside the home. Instead, use simple labels such as “Garage,” “Garden Shed,” or “Hall Cupboard.” If you keep several similar-looking keys together, a small coloured tag can make them easier to tell apart.

It’s also worth thinking about where your spare house key is stored. Hiding it under the doormat or in a flowerpot might seem convenient, but these are among the first places a burglar is likely to check. A better option is leaving a spare key with a trusted family member, friend, or neighbour who lives nearby.

If you’ve recently moved house, consider whether all the previous keys are still accounted for. You may decide it’s worthwhile changing the locks, particularly if you’re unsure how many copies are in circulation. It’s a one-off expense that can provide lasting peace of mind.

Finally, take a moment to remove any keys you no longer need. Holding onto keys for old padlocks, previous homes, or broken cabinets only creates clutter and confusion.

A little organisation goes a long way. Knowing exactly which key opens what, and storing them safely, can save frustration when you’re in a hurry and help keep your home more secure. It’s one of those small jobs that’s easy to put off, but satisfying once it’s done.
