Happiness isn’t always found in big moments. More often, it’s the simple pleasures that brighten an ordinary day. The smell of fresh coffee, a favourite song on the radio, a walk by the water, or a chat with a neighbour can lift your mood more than you might expect. The trick is remembering to make time for them.

Try making a list of the little things that make you smile. Keep it somewhere you’ll see it, such as on the fridge, beside your computer, or in a notebook. Your list might include watching the sunrise, reading a chapter of a good book, tending the garden, baking a favourite recipe, or calling an old friend.

When life feels busy or you’re having a difficult week, that list can be a gentle reminder that enjoyment doesn’t always require a special occasion. Even setting aside 15 or 20 minutes for something you genuinely like can help break up the day and give you something to look forward to.

Don’t be afraid to add new experiences as well. Visit a café you’ve never tried, take a different walking route, browse a local bookshop, or attend a community event. Sometimes the smallest change in routine introduces a new favourite pastime.

You can also share your list with family or friends. They may discover ideas they’d like to try themselves, and you might even find a new activity to enjoy together. It’s a simple way to spark conversations that aren’t centred on appointments, chores, or everyday responsibilities.

Life doesn’t have to be extraordinary to be enjoyable. Often, it’s the small moments that leave the biggest impression. The more attention you give to the things that make you smile, the easier they become to find in your everyday routine.
