The Role of Exercise in a Good Night’s Rest

For many older New Zealanders, a good night’s sleep can feel harder to come by with each passing year. The good news is that the link between exercise and sleep is well established, and small changes to your daily routine can make a real difference to how well you rest.

Why Exercise and Sleep Go Hand in Hand

Regular movement helps regulate your body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. When you stay active during the day, your body naturally becomes more ready for rest at night. Exercise also helps reduce stress hormones, ease joint stiffness and muscle tension, and improve mood, all of which contribute to falling asleep faster and staying asleep longer. Research consistently shows that adults who exercise regularly report better sleep quality than those who remain inactive.

Gentle Ways to Stay Active

You do not need intense workouts to benefit from the connection between exercise and sleep. Gentle, low-impact activities are often best for seniors and can be just as effective. A daily walk along the beach or through a local park, a swim at your community pool, gardening, or a gentle yoga or tai chi class are all excellent options. Even light stretching or household chores can add up over the day and support better rest.

Timing Matters

While exercise and sleep support each other, timing plays an important role. Try to finish moderate activity at least three hours before bedtime, as exercising too close to sleep can leave you feeling alert rather than relaxed. Morning or early afternoon movement, particularly outdoors, offers the added benefit of natural light exposure, which further supports healthy sleep patterns.

Other Habits Worth Considering

Alongside regular movement, maintaining a consistent bedtime, limiting caffeine later in the day, and creating a calm, cool bedroom environment can all work together with exercise to improve sleep quality. Combining these habits often brings better results than relying on any single change alone.

A Simple Step Toward Better Rest

Improving sleep does not need to be complicated. By building gentle, regular movement into your day, you can support both your physical health and the quality of your rest. As always, check with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you have existing health conditions.
