Planning a holiday often means booking flights, choosing accommodation, and deciding what to pack.

Health preparations, however, are sometimes left until the final week before departure. If your trip involves overseas travel, especially to less familiar destinations, it’s worth checking whether any vaccinations or health advice apply well before you leave.

Some vaccines need to be given several weeks before your departure to provide the best protection. Depending on where you’re travelling, you may be advised to have vaccinations against illnesses such as hepatitis A, typhoid, or yellow fever. Even if no vaccinations are required, your GP or travel clinic can let you know about any health risks at your destination.

It’s also a good opportunity to review your routine vaccinations. Protection against illnesses like influenza, COVID-19, tetanus, or shingles may still be recommended, particularly if you’ll be spending time in busy airports, on cruise ships, or travelling with large groups.

While you’re preparing, make sure you have enough prescription medication to last the entire trip, along with a little extra in case of unexpected delays. Carry medicines in their original packaging and keep them in your hand luggage rather than your checked suitcase. If you’re travelling internationally, check whether any of your medications require supporting documentation before entering another country.

Travel insurance is another important part of your preparation. Read the policy carefully to understand what medical expenses are covered and whether you need to declare any pre-existing health conditions. Spending a few extra minutes reading the fine print can save a great deal of stress if you need medical care while you’re away.

A little planning before you travel can make all the difference. Looking after your health should be about giving yourself the best chance to relax, explore, and enjoy your holiday with confidence from the moment you arrive.
