It’s Worth Getting Up Before Everyone Else

There’s a different kind of holiday waiting for the early risers. Before the cafés fill, before tour buses arrive, and before the streets begin to buzz, a destination often reveals a quieter side of itself. The air feels cooler, the light is softer, and for a little while, it can seem as though the place belongs only to the people who made the effort to greet the day.
You don’t have to be an enthusiastic morning person to appreciate it. In fact, many retirees naturally wake earlier than they used to, turning what was once an inconvenience into an unexpected travel advantage. Instead of lying awake waiting for everyone else to get moving, consider stepping outside.
A simple morning walk can completely change the way you remember a place. You might watch fishing boats heading out before sunrise, hear birds instead of traffic, or find a bakery just as fresh bread is coming out of the oven. Local shopkeepers often have more time for a friendly chat before the day becomes busy, and you’ll sometimes receive the best recommendations from the people opening their doors for the morning.
There’s another practical benefit too. Popular attractions are often far more enjoyable before the crowds arrive. Whether you’re visiting a botanic garden, a lookout, or a local market, you’ll have more space to wander at your own pace, take photographs without people in every frame, and simply soak up the atmosphere.
That doesn’t mean every morning needs an alarm. Part of retirement is enjoying a slower pace. But if you happen to wake early while travelling, resist the temptation to stay in your room scrolling through your phone. Put on comfortable shoes, take your camera if you enjoy photography, and see what the town looks like before it fully wakes up.
By the time most visitors are deciding where to have breakfast, you may already have your favourite memory of the day.
