It usually happens sometime after lunch.

You settle into your favourite chair “just for five minutes,” switch on the television, and before you know it, you’ve drifted off. When you wake up, it’s easy to shrug and say, “I suppose that’s just what happens when you get older.”

But feeling tired every afternoon isn’t always a simple case of ageing.

Our energy naturally rises and falls throughout the day, regardless of age. The difference is that, as we get older, we often become more aware of those dips. Poor sleep, dehydration, large meals, certain medications, or simply not moving around enough can all leave us feeling sluggish by mid-afternoon.

The good news is that small changes can sometimes make a noticeable difference. Take a look at what happens after lunch. If your meal is heavy or high in sugary foods, your energy may spike before dropping away just as quickly. Swapping part of your meal for a salad, adding more protein, or choosing wholegrain foods may help you feel steadier through the afternoon.

Movement matters too. It sounds counterintuitive when you’re tired, but a ten-minute walk around the block or even a gentle stroll through the garden can often leave you feeling more refreshed than another cup of coffee.

It’s also worth paying attention to your sleep at night. Waking frequently, snoring, or struggling to fall asleep can all affect how alert you feel the following day. If tiredness becomes persistent or starts interfering with daily life, it’s worth mentioning it to your doctor rather than assuming it’s simply part of getting older.

There’s nothing wrong with the occasional afternoon nap, either. Many people enjoy a short rest, particularly after a busy morning. The trick is keeping it brief so you wake feeling refreshed rather than groggy.

Growing older doesn’t automatically mean accepting constant tiredness. Sometimes your body is simply asking for a small adjustment, not a complete change of lifestyle.
