Your Linen Cupboard Probably Needs a Cull

The linen cupboard is one of those places where things accumulate quietly. A few new towels here, a set of sheets bought during a sale there, and before long the shelves are packed with enough bedding and bath linen to equip a small hotel.
The problem usually isn’t a lack of storage. It’s having far more than you actually use. Start by taking everything out rather than trying to sort one shelf at a time. You’ll probably find mismatched pillowcases, towels that have seen better days, and sheets belonging to beds you no longer own. Put everything into broad piles: keep, donate, and discard.
Be particularly ruthless with towels. A towel that has become thin, rough or permanently stained may have reached the end of its useful life. Some old towels can be repurposed as cleaning cloths, pet towels or rags, but there is little point keeping a large stack simply because it feels wasteful to let them go.
Sheets deserve the same scrutiny. Keep complete sets that fit the beds you currently use. If you’re holding on to a beautiful set because it might be useful one day, ask yourself how likely that day actually is. Bedding takes up a surprising amount of cupboard space.
When you’ve decided what stays, fold matching sets together. One simple trick is to place the folded pillowcases and top sheet inside the matching bottom sheet. You’ll then have a complete set ready to pull out rather than having to search through the cupboard for individual pieces.
Think about quantity, too. Most households don’t need an enormous rotation of bedding. Keeping enough for regular changes, plus a spare set or two, may be plenty depending on your household and laundry routine.
Donate good-quality unwanted linen through a local charity or community organisation where appropriate. Check their current donation requirements first, as not every organisation can accept used bedding or towels.
Finally, leave some empty space. A cupboard doesn’t need to be packed from shelf to shelf to be useful. Being able to reach in and pull out a fresh towel or sheet without bringing half the cupboard down is a small luxury that costs nothing.
