When Did You Last Check What’s in Your Pantry?

Most of us have a few forgotten items tucked away in the pantry. A tin pushed to the back of the shelf, a packet of pasta bought on special, or spices that haven’t been used in years. Over time, these forgotten groceries can build up, making it harder to find what you need and easier to buy things you already have.
A pantry check doesn’t need to take long. Every few months, take everything off the shelves and group similar items together. You’ll quickly see what you’re running low on, what’s nearing its best-before date, and what you can use to plan your next few meals.
While you’re sorting, look for damaged packaging or signs of pests. Opened packets should be sealed properly or transferred to airtight containers to help keep food fresh. Wipe down the shelves before putting everything back, and place older items at the front so they’re used first.
A well-organised pantry can also help reduce food waste. Instead of buying ingredients for every meal, challenge yourself to create a dish using what you already have. You may be surprised by how many meals you can make without another trip to the supermarket.
If you keep an emergency supply of food, check those items as well. Replace anything that’s expired and rotate newer products to the back of the shelf. Having a small stock of long-life essentials can be helpful during storms, unexpected illness, or times when getting to the shops isn’t convenient.
Finally, keep a simple shopping list somewhere nearby. When you use the last of an item, write it down straight away. It only takes a few seconds and can help prevent unnecessary purchases or forgotten essentials.
A quick seasonal check is all it takes to keep your kitchen organised and ready for whatever’s on the menu.
