Packing for a holiday usually starts with the suitcase. But if your checked luggage is delayed or doesn’t arrive when you do, the items in your carry-on bag can make all the difference. A little planning before you leave home can save a great deal of inconvenience during your journey.

The most important things should always stay with you. That includes your passport, travel documents, wallet, phone, chargers, prescription medications, and any medical devices you rely on. Never pack essential medication in checked luggage, even if you’ll only need it later in your trip. If your suitcase goes missing, you could find yourself without medication for several days.

It’s also worth packing a change of clothes and a few basic toiletries. You don’t need a full wardrobe, just enough to stay comfortable if your luggage is delayed overnight. A lightweight jumper or jacket is another sensible addition, as airports and aircraft cabins can often feel cooler than expected.

Long flights are much easier when you have a few comforts within reach. A reusable water bottle, a good book, headphones, reading glasses, and healthy snacks can help pass the time. If you use hearing aids, remember to pack spare batteries or your charging case where they’re easy to access.

Before travelling, check your airline’s rules for cabin baggage. Weight limits and size restrictions vary, and some items, such as liquids, must meet security requirements. Taking a few minutes to review the guidelines beforehand can help you avoid unnecessary delays at the airport.

Finally, think about what would be difficult or expensive to replace. Important documents, jewellery, electronic devices, and sentimental items are generally safer in your carry-on than in a checked suitcase.
