Splitting a purchase into smaller payments can make an expensive item seem much more affordable.

Buy Now, Pay Later services can be useful for some purchases, but the smaller instalments can also make it easy to lose sight of what you’re actually committing to. Before choosing this option, it’s worth looking beyond the amount you’ll pay today.

Start by checking the total cost. Some services advertise interest-free payments, but fees may still apply if you miss a payment or don’t meet the provider’s conditions. Make sure you understand exactly how much you’ll pay and when each instalment is due.

Think about how the payment fits into your existing budget. A $100 purchase might look manageable when it’s divided into four payments, but several purchases made at the same time can quickly create a collection of upcoming deductions from your bank account.

It’s particularly important to be careful with essentials. Using instalment payments for groceries, household bills, or other regular expenses can be a sign that your budget is under pressure. Spreading the cost doesn’t make the underlying expense disappear.

Before agreeing to a purchase, ask yourself whether you would still buy it if you had to pay the full amount today. If the answer is no, the instalment option may be encouraging you to spend more than you intended.

Keep track of your payment dates, too. Setting reminders can help prevent missed payments, particularly if you use more than one service. Review your bank account regularly so you know what’s scheduled to come out.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with spreading the cost of a purchase when you understand the terms and can comfortably afford the repayments. The important thing is not to confuse a smaller payment with a cheaper purchase.

Before clicking “Pay later,” make sure you know what you’re agreeing to—and whether the purchase actually belongs in your budget.
