What Happens to Your Online Accounts When You Die?

Most of us have spent years building a digital life. There are email accounts, online banking, social media profiles, cloud photo libraries, streaming services, shopping accounts, and perhaps thousands of family photos stored on a phone or computer.

We carefully think about our wills and who will inherit our possessions, yet many people never consider what should happen to these digital accounts.

It’s a conversation worth having. Imagine a family member trying to find important documents after you’ve passed away, only to discover they’re locked inside an email account nobody can access. Or perhaps your children want to retrieve treasured family photos stored in the cloud but don’t know where to begin. 

Planning ahead can spare your loved ones a great deal of stress during an already difficult time. A good first step is creating a simple list of your important digital accounts. You don’t need to write down every password, especially if you use a password manager, but it is helpful to record which services you use and where login information can be found. Store this information somewhere secure and let the person handling your estate know how to access it when the time comes.

Many online services also allow you to decide what should happen to your account if it becomes inactive. Some let you nominate a trusted contact who can manage certain parts of your account, while others allow you to request that your account be permanently deleted. Taking a few minutes to review these settings now can make your wishes much clearer later.

Don’t forget the memories you’ve collected over the years. Photos, videos, family history documents, and scanned letters often become some of the most treasured things we leave behind. Keeping them organised and backed up gives future generations a much better chance of preserving them.

Planning for your digital life is about making things easier for the people you care about. One day, your online accounts may matter far less than the stories, photographs, and memories they contain. Taking the time to organise them today is another way of looking after your family tomorrow.
