Moving house is exciting, but the financial admin can easily become an afterthought. Between packing boxes and organising the move, it’s surprisingly easy to forget about the everyday services that need to follow you to your new address. A little planning can prevent missed payments, unnecessary charges, and unwanted surprises.

Start with your utilities. Electricity, gas, water, internet, and other household services may need to be transferred, cancelled, or reconnected depending on where you’re moving. Find out in advance what your providers require and whether there are connection or cancellation fees.

Your insurance policies should also be reviewed. Home and contents insurance is generally linked to your circumstances and property, so don’t assume your existing policy will automatically provide the same cover at your new address. Contact your insurer before moving and make sure the new property is correctly covered.

Don’t forget about regular payments. Streaming services, memberships, subscriptions, donations, and other automatic payments may continue regardless of where you live. Review your bank statements before and after the move so you know exactly what’s still being charged.

Your address may also need updating with banks, government agencies, healthcare providers, insurers, and other organisations. Setting up mail redirection can help catch anything you’ve overlooked, but it’s better to update important accounts directly.

If you’re selling a property, keep records of final meter readings and any outstanding bills. If you’re buying or renting, find out exactly which household expenses you’ll be responsible for from the day you move in.

Moving is also a good opportunity to reconsider services you no longer need. If you’ve been paying for a subscription, membership, or plan that you rarely use, cancelling it as part of the move can simplify your finances.

A house move involves much more than changing your address. It’s also a chance to reset your household finances. Taking care of the small details before moving day can make the transition considerably smoother—and may even save you money in the process.
