Distance used to make keeping in touch much harder. A phone call could help, but hearing someone’s voice wasn’t quite the same as seeing their face. Today, video calling allows families to share birthdays, catch up over a cup of tea, and watch grandchildren grow up even when they’re living in different cities or countries.

You don’t need an expensive setup. A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera is usually enough. Popular services such as FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom, and Google Meet allow you to make video calls from home, often at little or no additional cost beyond your internet connection.

For anyone new to video calling, start with someone you already know. Ask a family member to help you set up the app and practise making a call. Once you’ve become comfortable with answering and ending calls, you can explore features such as muting the microphone or switching between cameras.

Video calls can be particularly useful for family occasions. A grandparent can watch a grandchild open a birthday present, relatives can join a Christmas celebration from different parts of the country, or siblings who rarely see each other can have a regular catch-up without anyone needing to travel.

They can also be useful for practical reasons. Family members can help troubleshoot a household problem, show you how to use a new device, or simply keep you company when you’re having a quiet day at home.

Good lighting makes a surprisingly big difference. Sitting near a window or placing a lamp in front of you rather than behind you can make your face easier to see. Keeping the camera at roughly eye level can also make conversations feel more natural.

Technology can’t replace being together in person. But when distance gets in the way, seeing someone’s face can make the kilometres feel considerably shorter. Sometimes a ten-minute video call is all it takes to turn an ordinary day into something a little brighter.
