Those Browser Extensions May Still Be Watching

Browser extensions can be incredibly useful. They can help you translate a webpage, block unwanted adverts, save passwords, or compare prices while you shop. The problem is that it’s easy to install an extension for one particular task and then forget it’s there.

Some extensions request permissions that allow them to read information on websites you visit. That doesn’t automatically mean an extension is malicious, but an extension you no longer use has little reason to retain access to your browsing activity.

Open your browser’s extension or add-on settings and look through the list. You may be surprised by what you’ve accumulated over the years. Some extensions may have been installed for a single purpose and never used again.

Start by removing anything you don’t recognise. If you’re unsure what an extension does, look at its name and publisher and search for it through your browser’s official extension store. Don’t simply keep something installed because you vaguely remember downloading it.

Then remove extensions you no longer need. If you haven’t used one in months and can’t think of a reason to keep it, uninstalling it is usually simpler than leaving it sitting in your browser indefinitely.

Pay attention to permissions when you install something new. An extension that needs access to every website you visit should have a clear reason for requiring that access. If the permissions seem excessive for what the extension actually does, reconsider whether you need it.

It’s also worth keeping your browser itself up to date. Security updates can address vulnerabilities, while outdated extensions may stop working properly or become incompatible with newer browser versions.

If you share a computer with other people, this is even more important. An extension installed by another user may still operate in your browser profile depending on how the computer is configured.

You don’t need to become an expert in browser security. Think of extensions like spare keys to your online life. If you don’t know what a key opens or why someone has it, it’s reasonable to find out.

A five-minute review can leave you with a cleaner browser and fewer unnecessary pieces of software quietly running in the background.
