The Washing Machine Drawer Needs Cleaning Too

You probably clean your clothes regularly, but how often do you clean the part of the washing machine that holds the detergent? The drawer can quietly collect powder, liquid detergent, fabric softener, and water until it becomes sticky, stained, or even mouldy.
Open the drawer and take a proper look. You may find hardened detergent around the edges, a layer of residue underneath the compartments, or a small amount of stagnant water. If the drawer smells unpleasant, that’s another sign it could use some attention.
Most detergent drawers can be removed for cleaning, although the exact method varies between washing machines. Check the appliance manual if you’re unsure how to release yours. Don’t force it, as plastic clips can break surprisingly easily.
Once removed, rinse the drawer under warm water and use an old toothbrush or small cleaning brush to work into the corners and narrow channels. Pay particular attention to the section used for fabric softener, where residue can become particularly stubborn.
The space where the drawer sits needs cleaning too. Wipe inside the opening with a damp cloth and remove any visible build-up. A narrow brush can help reach areas that are difficult to access with a cloth.
Once everything is clean, let the drawer dry before putting it back. It is also worth leaving the drawer slightly open after a wash, if your machine and laundry setup allow it. Allowing air to circulate can help reduce moisture sitting inside the machine.
You may also want to review how much detergent you’re using. More isn’t necessarily better. Excess detergent can leave residue behind, particularly if you’re washing at lower temperatures or using more than the manufacturer’s recommended amount.
While you’re cleaning the drawer, wipe around the washing machine door and rubber seal as well. Small amounts of water, lint, and detergent residue can collect there after repeated washes.
This isn’t a job that needs doing every week. But adding the detergent drawer to your occasional cleaning routine can help keep the washing machine fresher and running as it should.
After all, a machine designed to clean your clothes deserves a little cleaning of its own.
