A guided tour can take the pressure out of planning a holiday. Someone else organises the transport, accommodation, and sightseeing, leaving you free to enjoy the destination. But a tour described as relaxed or suitable for mature travellers can still involve early starts, long walks, and a packed itinerary. Before paying a deposit, find out what an ordinary day actually looks like.

Start with the pace. Ask how many activities are scheduled each day, how early the group usually departs, and how much time is spent travelling between stops. An itinerary might list six attractions in one day, but that does not tell you whether there will be time to sit down for lunch or enjoy a place without watching the clock.

Walking requirements deserve specific questions. A tour operator might describe an excursion as easy, yet include cobblestone streets, steep hills, uneven paths, or several flights of stairs.

Ask about the longest walking stretch, opportunities to rest, and whether you can skip an activity without affecting the rest of your trip. If you use a walking aid, explain your needs before booking rather than relying on a general accessibility description.

Find out how much independence the tour allows. Some travellers enjoy having every meal and activity organised, while others prefer a free afternoon to explore a local market or linger at a café. Ask whether optional excursions are genuinely optional and what happens if you decide to spend a morning at the hotel instead.

The group size matters, too. A tour with 10 people may feel very different from one with 25, particularly when boarding transport, visiting busy attractions, or waiting for everyone to gather. Check the maximum group size rather than relying on the phrase small group, which can mean different things to different operators.

Finally, request a complete breakdown of the price. Clarify whether gratuities, entrance fees, meals, airport transfers, and optional excursions are included. Confirm the cancellation policy, room arrangements, and any single supplement if you are travelling alone.

A well-chosen tour should make travelling easier, not leave you exhausted trying to keep up. Ask practical questions, read the itinerary carefully, and choose a pace that lets you enjoy the experience rather than simply complete it.
