A holiday can quickly become inconvenient when you arrive somewhere expecting to pick up groceries, toiletries, or a few forgotten essentials, only to discover that most of the shops have already closed.

Opening hours can vary considerably between countries, cities, and even neighbourhoods. A supermarket near a busy tourist area may stay open late, while a smaller local shop may close much earlier. Sundays and public holidays can be particularly different from what you are used to at home.

This matters most on arrival day. If your flight lands in the evening, you may not want to spend your first few hours searching unfamiliar streets for somewhere to buy water, breakfast supplies, or basic toiletries.

Before leaving, look up a supermarket or convenience store near your accommodation and check its current opening hours. Save the location on your phone so you can find it easily after a long journey.

Do not assume the hours shown online will always be accurate, particularly around public holidays. Hotels, accommodation hosts, and local tourism offices can often tell you which nearby shops are actually open.

It is also worth considering what you genuinely need on the first night. If you take regular medication, for example, that is something to organise before travelling rather than something to leave until you arrive. Other essentials can often be packed in your carry-on or bought before leaving the airport.

Local shopping hours can also affect sightseeing plans. In smaller towns, you may discover that shops close for a few hours in the afternoon or that restaurants begin serving dinner later than you expected. Understanding the local rhythm can save you from spending part of your holiday standing outside a locked door.

You do not need to plan every purchase in advance. The point is simply to know where you can get the basics when you need them.

A five-minute search before you leave home can prevent a surprisingly annoying first evening. Sometimes good travel planning is not about knowing the major attractions. It is knowing where to buy a bottle of water when everything else has already shut.
