Retirement is often described as a finish line, but for most New Zealanders it feels more like stepping into the unknown. There is no official handbook handed to you at 65, and no tidy retirement checklist waiting in your letterbox. Yet a little preparation can turn uncertainty into confidence.

Start with your finances. Before you stop working, get a clear picture of your income sources. This includes NZ Superannuation, KiwiSaver withdrawals, personal savings and any part-time work you may still want to do. Many seniors find it helpful to speak with a financial adviser who understands New Zealand’s retirement landscape, especially around tax and investment risk at this stage of life.

Review your KiwiSaver settings. As retirement nears, it is worth checking whether your fund type still matches your risk comfort. A conservative fund may suit those planning to withdraw soon, while others prefer to keep some growth exposure for a longer retirement.

Think about healthcare early. Consider whether private health insurance still makes sense for your situation, and look into what support is available through your local district health services. Staying on top of regular checkups becomes even more important once you are no longer covered by workplace wellness programmes.

Plan where and how you want to live. Some retirees downsize to free up equity; others choose to stay put and modify their home for comfort and safety. Think about proximity to family, transport access and community activities that keep you socially connected.

Update your legal documents. A retirement checklist should always include a review of your will, enduring power of attorney and any outdated beneficiary details. These documents protect both you and your loved ones.

Don’t forget your sense of purpose. Retirement is not just a financial transition; it is an emotional one too. Many seniors thrive by volunteering, joining clubs or picking up hobbies that give structure to their week.

Retirement can be a rewarding new chapter when approached with a clear plan. By working through a simple retirement checklist covering money, health, home and purpose, you give yourself the best chance of enjoying these years with confidence rather than worry.
