Spend enough time reading financial advice, and you’ll come across plenty of lists telling you what not to buy. Cut back on this, avoid spending on that, and think twice before making another purchase.

There’s value in being careful with money, especially in retirement. But there’s another question that’s just as useful: What do people almost never regret spending money on?

For many retirees, the answer isn’t luxury items. It’s things that make everyday life a little easier or a lot more enjoyable.

A good mattress is one example. If you’re spending seven or eight hours in bed each night, it’s hard to argue against investing in something that helps you sleep well. The same goes for supportive walking shoes. They might cost more upfront, but they’re often worth every dollar if they keep you comfortable on your daily walks or while travelling.

People also rarely regret spending money on experiences. A weekend away with family, tickets to a concert, or taking the grandchildren to the zoo often become memories that last much longer than the latest gadget or household decoration.

Home improvements can fall into this category too, particularly those that make life safer or more comfortable. Better lighting, a more comfortable chair, or a handrail where you need one may not seem exciting, but they can make a noticeable difference every single day.

That doesn’t mean every purchase needs to have a practical purpose. Sometimes buying fresh flowers for the dining table or treating yourself to lunch with a friend is money well spent because it lifts your mood.

Retirement isn’t about spending as little as possible. It’s about spending intentionally.

Before buying something, it can help to ask a simple question: Will this improve my life next week, next month, or next year? If the answer is yes, it may be a purchase you’ll be glad you made. The goal is to spend on the things that genuinely add value to your life.
