The Printer You Rarely Use Still Needs Attention

A printer can spend months doing absolutely nothing, then suddenly become essential. You need to print a return label, a travel document, or an important form, only to discover that the printer has other ideas.

Inkjet printers in particular can develop problems when they sit unused for long periods. Ink can dry around the print head, resulting in faded lines, missing colours, or pages that look streaky.

If you only print occasionally, it is worth turning the printer on periodically and following the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Some models can perform a cleaning cycle or print a test page to keep the system working properly.

Do not automatically assume that buying a new cartridge will solve every problem. If the printer has been sitting unused for a long time, the issue may be dried ink or a blocked print head rather than an empty cartridge. Your printer’s maintenance menu may provide a more useful starting point.

Paper deserves attention too. Paper that has been sitting in a humid environment can become less reliable, particularly if the sheets have curled or stuck together. Store spare paper somewhere dry and reasonably flat.

If you use the printer very rarely, consider whether you actually need to keep one at home. Libraries, stationery shops, print centres, and other local services may offer inexpensive printing, depending on where you live. For occasional documents, that may be simpler than maintaining a machine and buying cartridges that expire before you use them.

There is also the issue of old printers that are no longer supported. If your computer has trouble recognising the device, check whether the manufacturer still provides compatible drivers or software for your operating system before spending money on repairs.

A printer does not need constant attention. It simply benefits from a little maintenance before you urgently need it. The best time to discover that your printer has stopped working is during a quiet afternoon, not ten minutes before you need to leave the house.
