Every seasoned traveller has one thing they swear by. Surprisingly, it isn’t a particular suitcase or a clever packing trick. It’s leaving a little room in the itinerary.

When you’re retired, there’s no prize for squeezing five attractions into one day. In fact, one of the greatest luxuries of travelling later in life is having the freedom to slow down.

Many travel frustrations begin with an overly ambitious schedule. Flights are delayed, weather changes, queues are longer than expected, or you simply discover a café you’d like to spend another hour enjoying. If every minute has been planned, even small disruptions can become stressful.

Leaving space in your plans gives you flexibility. Instead of racing from one destination to another, you can enjoy where you are. Some of the most memorable travel moments happen by accident: chatting with locals, discovering a quiet walking track, or stumbling across a weekend market you hadn’t planned to visit.

It’s also kinder on your body. Long days of sightseeing can become tiring, especially if you’re adjusting to different climates or time zones. Scheduling quieter afternoons or occasional rest days can make the entire holiday more enjoyable.

A flexible itinerary doesn’t mean doing less. It simply means giving yourself permission to experience a destination rather than rushing through it.

Travel should leave you with great memories, not the feeling that you need another holiday to recover from the first one. Sometimes, the best decision you make before leaving home is deciding not to fill every hour.
