Booking a holiday often means entering your name several times. Flights, hotels, tours, and transfers may all ask for your details, and it is surprisingly easy for a spelling mistake to slip through.

For flights, the name on your booking can be particularly important. Airlines may require passenger details to match the travel document you will use, and correcting a mistake after booking can involve a fee or additional paperwork.

Start by looking at your confirmation emails rather than assuming everything was entered correctly. Compare the name, date of birth, and other personal details against your passport or other travel document.

Pay attention to small differences. A missing middle name, a letter entered incorrectly or a surname that doesn’t match your passport can become an issue, particularly when you’re travelling internationally. Different airlines have different rules about what counts as a minor correction and what requires a formal name change.

Hotels and other bookings can be more flexible, but accuracy still matters. If one person in your travelling party is booking accommodation for everyone, make sure the reservation reflects the correct guest details where required.

This is also important when booking travel for someone else. Double-check their details directly with them rather than relying on memory. A relative’s name that you’ve used for years may not be exactly how it appears on their passport.

If you spot a mistake, contact the airline, accommodation provider, or booking service as soon as possible. Don’t wait until you reach the airport and hope it won’t matter. Some corrections are straightforward when dealt with early.

Keep your confirmation emails and booking references somewhere accessible while travelling. A screenshot can be useful if you’re somewhere with limited internet access, although you should still retain the original booking information.

It’s a small administrative detail, but travel is full of situations where small details matter. Spending a few minutes comparing your bookings with your travel documents before leaving home can save you from trying to fix a spelling mistake at a check-in desk.

Your holiday should involve plenty of memorable moments. Your name being wrong on the booking doesn’t need to be one of them.
