The Kitchen Drawer Deserves a Proper Clear-Out

Every kitchen has one. The drawer where batteries, takeaway menus, rubber bands, old takeaway containers, spare keys, pens, and mysterious bits of plastic somehow end up together. It starts out useful, then gradually becomes impossible to navigate.

A kitchen drawer doesn’t need a complete makeover. Emptying it onto the bench is usually enough to reveal just how much has accumulated.

Start by throwing away anything broken or genuinely useless. That takeaway container without a lid? Gone. The collection of blunt pens? Test them and keep the ones that work. Those instructions for an appliance you haven’t owned for ten years can probably go too.

Then group what’s left. Batteries can go together, cooking utensils in another place, and household odds and ends somewhere else. If something doesn’t actually belong in the kitchen, return it to where it should live.

Pay attention to duplicates. You probably don’t need six pairs of scissors or a dozen takeaway menus for restaurants you rarely visit. Keeping the things you regularly use within easy reach makes the drawer far more practical.

It’s also a good opportunity to check batteries before storing them. Keep them somewhere cool and dry, and don’t leave loose batteries where they can come into contact with metal objects.

If you have important items in the drawer—spare keys, appliance information, or emergency contact details—give them a more deliberate home. A small labelled container can prevent them from disappearing beneath everything else.

You don’t need to become a minimalist. The goal is simply to make one of the most frequently used spaces in your kitchen work better. And once you’ve cleared it, there’s something strangely satisfying about opening the drawer and finding exactly what you’re looking for.
