The Holiday Photos Worth Taking

Open the photo gallery on your phone after a holiday and you’ll probably find the usual collection. A famous landmark, a few scenic lookouts, perhaps a selfie or two, and enough sunset photos to last a lifetime.
They’re lovely reminders of where you’ve been. But ask yourself this: which photos do you actually go back and look at?
For many people, it’s not the postcard-perfect shots that mean the most. It’s the photo of your partner laughing over breakfast at a small café you stumbled across by chance. It’s the grandchild asleep in the back seat after a long day exploring. It’s the handwritten menu outside a tiny bakery or the friendly dog that insisted on following you through a country village.
Those are the moments that bring a holiday back to life.
Travelling in retirement often comes with a welcome change of pace. You’re not trying to squeeze every attraction into a few days or race through a checklist of must-see sights. That slower rhythm gives you more opportunities to notice the little things that make a place memorable.
Next time you’re away, try taking a few photos that tell the story of the day rather than just the destination. Snap the morning view from your accommodation before everyone is awake.
Capture the local market where you bought fresh fruit or the quiet park bench where you stopped for lunch. Even the train ticket tucked into your pocket or the coffee cup with the café’s logo can become part of the story.
You don’t need hundreds of pictures, either. A handful of thoughtful photos often says far more than a camera roll filled with nearly identical landscapes.
Years from now, the mountain will probably still be standing exactly where it is today. What you’ll treasure are the moments that happened while you were there, the conversations, the unexpected detours, and the people who shared them with you.
