The Grocery Discounts That Aren’t Always a Bargain

A supermarket sign announces a special, and the price looks too good to ignore. Two for one, a larger family pack, or a discount available through a loyalty card can make it feel as though you are saving money simply by buying more.

But a lower price does not always mean a better deal. When you are shopping for one or two people, a multibuy can leave you paying for food you never needed or throwing away something that spoils before you can finish it.

Start by comparing the price per kilogram, litre, or individual item rather than relying on the size of the discount. New Zealand supermarkets display unit pricing on many grocery products, making it easier to compare different brands and pack sizes. A larger container may cost less per serving, but only if you will actually use it.

Loyalty schemes deserve a closer look, too. Some offers require you to scan a membership card, buy a minimum quantity, or purchase a particular size. If you regularly shop at the same supermarket, the savings may be worthwhile. However, buying something you would not otherwise choose just to earn points can easily cancel out the benefit.

Think about shelf life before stocking up. Toilet paper, washing powder, and other household essentials are often sensible bulk purchases if you have room to store them. Fresh produce, dairy products, and bakery items require more thought, particularly if you live alone or have limited freezer space.

It can also help to compare your usual supermarket with another nearby option. New Zealand’s Commerce Commission has investigated grocery competition and pricing practices, while Consumer NZ regularly compares supermarket prices and examines how shoppers can make informed choices.

Before putting a special in your trolley, ask yourself three questions: Is it cheaper per unit? Will I use all of it? Would I buy it at this price without the promotional sign?

You do not need to avoid supermarket specials. The best bargains are simply the ones that suit your household, reduce what you spend on things you already need, and leave less food going to waste.
