Ordering groceries online can be a real convenience, especially if getting to the supermarket is difficult or carrying heavy bags has become uncomfortable. You can shop from home, compare products at your own pace, and have everything delivered to your door.

The catch is that the price displayed beside each product is not necessarily what you will pay at checkout. Delivery charges, service fees, minimum-spend requirements, and optional substitutions can all affect the final bill.

Start by looking at the total before confirming your order. Some services charge less for delivery at quieter times, while others offer membership plans with reduced delivery fees. These can be worthwhile if you order regularly, but only if the savings outweigh the membership cost.

Minimum-spend offers deserve a little scrutiny. If you need to add another $15 worth of groceries to qualify for delivery, ask whether those items are things you would have bought anyway. Spending more to unlock a discount is not a saving if the extra food ends up unused.

Pay attention to substitutions, too. If an item is unavailable, the shopper may offer an alternative brand or a different size. Check whether you can set a price limit or reject substitutions that do not suit your needs. A more expensive replacement can quietly push the total beyond what you intended to spend.

It is also worth comparing the online price with the price in store. Depending on the supermarket and promotion, some offers may not be available through the delivery service. Consumer NZ regularly examines grocery pricing and supermarket shopping practices, which can help shoppers understand how prices and promotions compare.

Before placing an order, check the delivery address, time slot, and payment method. If you live in an apartment or retirement village, include clear instructions about the entrance or where bags should be left. That can prevent missed deliveries or groceries being left somewhere inconvenient.

Online grocery shopping can be a useful tool, not just a luxury. The key is to judge it by the full cost, including the time and effort it saves you. A delivery fee may be money well spent, provided you know what you are paying for before you press the final button.
