The First Monday Nobody Talks About

The farewell morning tea is over. The speeches have been made, the gifts have been unwrapped, and you’ve finally switched off the alarm that used to ring at the same time every weekday.

Then Monday arrives. Not the first Monday after a holiday, when work is waiting for you the following week. The first Monday when there’s nowhere you have to be.

For some people, it feels wonderful. You wake naturally, make another cup of coffee, and enjoy the quiet without glancing at the clock. For others, it’s unexpectedly unsettling. After decades of structured weeks, the absence of routine can leave you wondering what you’re supposed to do next.

Very few people talk about this part of retirement, yet it’s completely normal. Our working lives shape more than our income. They give rhythm to our days. Mondays mean one thing, Fridays another. Even the weekend has its own feel because it’s different from the rest of the week. Once that structure disappears, every day can start to look remarkably similar.

The answer isn’t to recreate your working week with a colour-coded diary full of activities. Instead, it helps to create a gentle rhythm of your own. Perhaps Mondays become market day, Wednesdays are reserved for a walk with friends, or Friday mornings are when you visit your favourite café before doing the grocery shopping. These small rituals give the week shape without making it feel like another job.

It’s also worth remembering that retirement is an adjustment, not a switch you flip overnight. Just as it took years to build your working routine, it takes time to build a retirement routine that feels comfortable. There’s no prize for getting it right immediately.

Eventually, you’ll stop thinking about Mondays altogether. They’ll simply become another day to enjoy at your own pace. And one morning you’ll realise that the feeling of needing to be somewhere has quietly disappeared, replaced by something far more satisfying: The freedom to decide for yourself.
