Every home has one. It’s the cupboard where batteries, spare light bulbs, takeaway menus, instruction manuals, tape, scissors, and dozens of other odds and ends seem to collect. You know roughly what’s in there, but finding what you need often means emptying half the shelf onto the floor.

Spending an hour organising this one space can save you a surprising amount of time throughout the year. Start by taking everything out and grouping similar items together. You’ll quickly spot duplicate purchases, flat batteries, expired products, and things you didn’t even realise you still had.

Use small containers or clear storage tubs to keep similar items in one place. One could hold batteries and chargers, another basic tools, and another stationery. Labelling each container makes it much easier to find what you need without rummaging through the entire cupboard.

It’s also a good opportunity to check emergency supplies. Replace old batteries, test your torch, and make sure your first aid kit is complete. If you keep instruction manuals, place them in a single folder so they’re easy to locate when you need them.

Once everything is back in place, resist the temptation to use the cupboard as a dumping ground again. When you buy something new, take a few extra seconds to put it in its designated spot. Future you will appreciate the effort.

If you discover items you no longer need, consider donating unopened supplies or recycling anything that can’t be reused. Clearing out unnecessary clutter creates more space for the things that genuinely belong there.
