The Case for Packing Less

The Case for Packing Less

There’s a moment many travellers know all too well. You’re standing beside the hotel bed on the last day of your holiday, staring at a suitcase full of clothes you never wore.

That “just in case” jumper? Untouched. The extra pair of shoes? They stayed in the suitcase. The smart outfit you packed for a dinner that never happened? It comes home exactly as it left.

It’s a familiar story, especially if you’ve spent years believing it’s better to be overprepared than caught short.

But experienced travellers often discover the opposite is true. Packing less doesn’t mean going without. It means making room for a more relaxed holiday.

A lighter suitcase is easier to lift into the car, place in an overhead locker, or wheel through an airport. You spend less time unpacking and repacking, and you’re far less likely to misplace something because everything has its place.

The trick isn’t to pack fewer clothes. It’s to pack clothes that work harder. Neutral colours, lightweight layers, and comfortable shoes will usually cover far more situations than a suitcase full of “maybe” outfits. Most accommodation also offers laundry facilities or is close to one, making it unnecessary to pack for every single day.

It’s worth leaving a little empty space as well. Holidays have a habit of producing unexpected purchases, whether it’s a book from a local shop, handmade crafts from a market, or a bottle of something special you’d like to bring home. A suitcase that’s already bursting at the seams leaves little room for those memories.

Packing light also changes the way you travel. You’re less focused on managing luggage and more focused on enjoying where you are. You can move through train stations, airports, and hotel lobbies without feeling like you’re hauling your entire wardrobe with you.

After all, the best souvenirs aren’t the clothes you packed but never wore. They’re the stories you bring home instead.
