The Bin Itself Needs a Clean Too

You change the rubbish bag regularly, wipe the kitchen bench, and wash the dishes. But when was the last time you actually cleaned the bin?

It is easy to forget because the liner creates the impression that the rubbish never touches the container itself. In reality, bags leak, food packaging drips and small scraps find their way underneath the liner. Over time, the inside of the bin can become sticky, stained and surprisingly smelly.

Start by emptying the bin completely and removing the liner. If there is anything stuck to the bottom, deal with that first rather than immediately adding another bag on top.

For a washable bin, warm water and ordinary household detergent may be enough for routine cleaning. Give particular attention to the lid, rim, and the area around the handles, where grime tends to collect. Rinse thoroughly and allow the bin to dry properly before putting a fresh liner in.

If the bin has a removable inner bucket, take it outside or to a suitable area where you can clean it without making a mess. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions if the material is delicate or the bin contains electrical components.

Odour is often a sign that something has been left behind rather than simply a problem with the rubbish bag. Cleaning the surface is more useful than repeatedly spraying air freshener over the smell.

The lid deserves attention too. If your bin has a pedal mechanism, the lid can be one of the more frequently touched parts of the entire kitchen. Wipe it down regularly, particularly if people open it with their hands.

You do not need to turn bin cleaning into a weekly household ritual. Give it a proper clean whenever you notice residue, spills, or persistent smells, and make it part of a deeper kitchen clean every so often.

There is something satisfying about putting a fresh liner into a genuinely clean bin. It is not glamorous housework, and nobody is going to compliment you on it. But once the bin stops smelling faintly mysterious every time you open it, you will wonder why you left it so long.
