That Cheap Fare May Not Include Your Suitcase

A flight can look like a bargain until you reach the part of the booking where you’re asked whether you’d like to add a checked bag. What appeared to be a great fare may suddenly cost considerably more once you’ve added the luggage you actually need.

Airlines increasingly offer different fare types, and the cheapest option may include only a small carry-on allowance. Checked baggage can cost extra, with the price varying according to your route, fare type, and when you add the bag.

Before comparing flights, look beyond the headline ticket price. Check how much cabin baggage you’re allowed to bring, whether a checked suitcase is included and what the maximum weight is for each.

The weight limit matters more than you might expect. A suitcase that is perfectly acceptable on one airline could incur an excess baggage charge on another. If you’re travelling with gifts, bulky clothing, or equipment, a few extra kilograms can become an expensive mistake.

Pay attention to how the airline defines carry-on baggage as well. Some fares include a small personal item but charge separately for a larger cabin bag. The dimensions and weight limits can vary, so don’t assume the allowance is the same as your last trip.

If you’re booking a return journey, check whether the baggage allowance applies to both directions. Different airlines or fare types on a multi-flight itinerary can have different rules.

It can also be cheaper to add baggage during the booking process than at the airport. If you already know you’ll need a suitcase, compare the total cost of the fare plus baggage rather than making the decision based on the initial advertised price.

If you’re travelling as a couple, check whether the airline allows you to combine or share baggage allowances. Policies differ, so it’s better to confirm than assume you can simply distribute your belongings between two tickets.

A suitcase is part of the cost of many holidays. Treating it that way when comparing flights gives you a much clearer idea of what you’re actually paying. The cheapest fare isn’t necessarily the cheapest journey. Sometimes the difference is hiding in the luggage allowance.
