Small Digital Habits That Protect Your Privacy

Looking after your privacy online doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, a few simple habits can go a long way towards protecting your personal information. You don’t need to be a technology expert. Being a little more mindful about what you share and where you share it is often enough.
One good habit is to think before posting on social media. A holiday photo is lovely to share, but announcing you’re away from home for several weeks could tell the wrong people that your house is empty. Consider waiting until you’re home before posting photos from your trip.
It’s also worth checking your privacy settings from time to time. Social media platforms regularly update their features, and settings can change. Taking a few minutes to review who can see your posts, photos, and personal details helps you stay in control of what others can access.
Another useful habit is logging out of accounts when using a shared computer. Whether you’re at the library, a community centre, or staying with family, signing out before you leave helps prevent someone else from accessing your email, shopping accounts, or online banking.
Be careful about the information you share in online quizzes and competitions as well. Questions about your first pet, the street you grew up on, or your favourite teacher may seem harmless, but they’re often similar to the security questions used to recover online accounts. It’s best to keep those details private.
Finally, take a moment every few months to review the apps on your phone or tablet. Delete the ones you no longer use and check what permissions the remaining apps have. If an app no longer needs access to your location, camera, or microphone, you can usually turn those permissions off in your device’s settings.
Protecting your privacy is about using it with confidence and making informed choices. A handful of simple digital habits can help keep your personal information secure while allowing you to enjoy everything technology has to offer.
