Energy costs can take a sizeable bite out of the household budget. The good news is that reducing your power bill doesn’t always require expensive upgrades or major renovations. A few small changes to your daily habits can add up to noticeable savings over the course of a year.

Start by identifying the appliances that use the most electricity. Heating and cooling, hot water systems, clothes dryers, and older refrigerators are often among the biggest contributors. Using these appliances more efficiently can make a real difference without affecting your comfort.

Heating is one area where simple adjustments can pay off. Close curtains as the sun goes down to help keep warmth inside during winter, and seal any noticeable draughts around doors and windows. If you’re using a heat pump, keep the filters clean so it can operate as efficiently as possible.

In the kitchen and laundry, look for opportunities to use less energy. Wait until you have a full load before running the dishwasher or washing machine, and whenever practical, dry clothes on a washing line instead of using the dryer. If you’re replacing an appliance, compare its energy rating before making a purchase. A more efficient model may cost less to run over the long term.

Don’t overlook the electricity being used when appliances are switched off. Televisions, game consoles, and other electronics can continue drawing power while on standby. Turning them off at the wall when they’re not in use is a simple habit that may trim your electricity use over time.

It can also be worthwhile to review your electricity plan every year. Energy providers regularly update their pricing, and a plan that suited your household a few years ago may no longer be the best option. Spending a little time comparing available plans could result in worthwhile savings.

Small changes may seem insignificant on their own, but together they can make a meaningful difference to both your budget and your home.
