Should You Pay With Your Phone Instead of Your Wallet?

Not long ago, paying with a phone seemed like something from the future. Today, it’s become a common sight at supermarkets, cafés, and pharmacies. If you’ve wondered whether it’s worth trying yourself, the good news is that mobile payments are designed to be both convenient and secure.
Services such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet allow you to store your debit or credit card on your smartphone. Instead of inserting your card or handling cash, you simply hold your phone near the payment terminal and confirm the purchase using your fingerprint, face recognition, or passcode.
Many people are surprised to learn that paying with a phone can be more secure than using a physical card. Your card number isn’t shared with the retailer during the transaction. Instead, the payment uses encrypted information that’s unique to that purchase, helping protect your financial details.
That doesn’t mean you should let your guard down. Always keep your phone protected with a passcode or biometric security, and never hand your unlocked phone to someone you don’t know. If your device is lost or stolen, you can usually lock it or erase its contents remotely using your online account.
If you’re thinking about giving mobile payments a try, start somewhere familiar. Buy a coffee or pick up a few groceries and take your time. Most retailers that accept contactless cards will also accept contactless payments from a smartphone. After a few purchases, many people find the process becomes second nature.
Of course, carrying your physical card as a backup is still a sensible idea, particularly when travelling or visiting places where digital payments may not always be available.
