Should You Move to a Retirement Village?

For some people, the idea of moving to a retirement village is exciting. For others, it’s a conversation they’d rather avoid.

It’s understandable. Leaving a home that’s been part of your life for decades isn’t simply a property decision. It’s where birthdays were celebrated, grandchildren played in the backyard, and countless ordinary moments became cherished memories. Deciding whether to move involves far more than comparing floor plans.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that retirement villages are only for people who need care. In reality, many residents move while they’re still active and independent. They enjoy the appeal of having less home maintenance, more security, and neighbours at a similar stage of life.

Instead of spending weekends cleaning gutters or mowing a large lawn, they have more time for travel, hobbies, or catching up with friends.

That doesn’t mean a retirement village is the right choice for everyone. Some people value the space and privacy of their family home, while others want to stay close to familiar neighbours or continue tending a much-loved garden. There’s no “correct” age to make the move, and there’s certainly no rule that says you have to.

If you’re considering the option, take your time. Visit more than one village and ask plenty of questions. What services are included in the fees? How do the contracts work? Are there social activities if you want them, without feeling obliged to join in? Just as importantly, talk to current residents. They’ll often give you the most honest picture of everyday life.

It’s also worth involving your family in the conversation, while remembering that the final decision is yours. Your children may have strong opinions, but they’re not the ones who’ll be living there. The place that feels right should suit your lifestyle, your finances, and the future you want to create.

For some, staying put brings happiness. For others, moving opens the door to a simpler and more connected way of living.
