Review Who Can Access Your Bank Account

Over the years, it’s easy for other people to end up with some form of access to your bank account. Perhaps you opened a joint account with a partner, gave someone authority to help with your banking, or added another person when you needed assistance managing your finances. What’s less obvious is whether that access is still appropriate today.

This is worth checking even if you haven’t made any changes to your banking for years. Relationships change, circumstances change, and the person who once needed access may no longer need it.

Start by making a list of your current bank accounts and contact your bank to ask who is authorised on each one. Don’t rely on memory. If you have several accounts, an old savings account or joint account may have arrangements you’ve forgotten about.

Pay particular attention to accounts that were opened for a specific purpose. An account that was once used for household bills, a family business, or helping someone manage finances may still have the same access arrangements years later.

If someone is listed as a joint account holder, don’t assume removing them is as simple as taking their name off. Joint accounts can have different rules from accounts where someone has authority to act on your behalf. Your bank can explain what applies to your particular account and what documentation may be required.

It’s also important not to confuse account access with the arrangements in your will. Giving someone access to help you manage your banking while you’re alive is a separate matter from deciding who should receive your money after your death.

If you’re comfortable with the current arrangements, there may be nothing to change. But if someone has access who no longer needs it, ask your bank what steps you need to take to update the account.

This is one of those financial checks that can easily be overlooked because nothing appears to be wrong. Your account works, your statements arrive, and the money is where you expect it to be.

But taking a few minutes to understand exactly who can access your money can give you greater control over your finances and prevent an old arrangement from becoming a future problem.
