Visits from grandchildren are one of the great joys of later life. Whether your mokopuna live down the road in Auckland or are flying in from overseas, a little preparation goes a long way towards making their time with you safe, comfortable and memorable. Here are some general tips to help you get your home ready.

Think About Safety First

Young children see the world differently to adults, so it helps to look at your home through their eyes. Loose rugs, steep staircases and low coffee tables with sharp corners can all pose a risk to little ones who are still finding their feet. If your grandchildren are toddlers, consider fitting simple safety gates near stairs and covering power points. For older children, check that decks, pools and garden gates are secure, as many New Zealand homes open straight onto outdoor spaces.

Create a Comfortable Space

You do not need a spare room dedicated entirely to grandchildren, but having a few essentials on hand makes visits from grandchildren much smoother. A spare bed or fold-out mattress, a warm blanket and a nightlight can help younger visitors settle in unfamiliar surroundings. If grandchildren stay overnight regularly, keeping a small box of toys, books or pyjamas at your place saves everyone from packing extra bags each time.

Stock Up on the Basics

Check your pantry and fridge for kid-friendly snacks and drinks, and think about any allergies or dietary needs in advance. It is also worth keeping basic first aid supplies, sunscreen and insect repellent within reach, particularly during the warmer months when outdoor play is popular across New Zealand.

Plan Simple Activities

Visits from grandchildren do not need elaborate planning. A garden, some chalk, a deck of cards or a favourite storybook can keep children entertained for hours. Local parks, beaches and libraries are also wonderful free options for a change of scenery.

Take Care of Yourself Too

Hosting can be tiring, so pace activities around rest breaks and do not be afraid to ask family members to help with pickups or supervision.

With a little thoughtful preparation, visits from grandchildren can become a relaxed and cherished part of family life, giving both generations something to look forward to.
