Old-Fashioned Cleaning Tricks for Today

There is something comforting about the cleaning tricks our mothers and grandmothers swore by. Long before supermarket shelves filled up with brightly coloured sprays and gadgets, households across New Zealand relied on a few humble ingredients to keep things sparkling. The good news is that many of these old-fashioned cleaning tricks still work just as well today, and they are often gentler on your wallet, your home, and the environment.

White vinegar remains one of the most trusted cleaning tricks around. A simple mix of vinegar and water can cut through grease on kitchen benches, freshen up glass windows, and remove soap scum from bathroom tiles. It is inexpensive and easy to find at any local supermarket.

Baking soda is another kitchen cupboard hero. Sprinkled on a damp cloth, it gently scrubs away stains from pots, sinks, and even stovetops without scratching the surface. For carpets, a light dusting of baking soda left overnight can help lift musty odours before vacuuming the next morning.

Newspapers, once considered old news, still have a job to do. Scrunched up and used with a little vinegar water, it leaves windows and mirrors streak-free, something many paper towels struggle to achieve.

Lemon halves dipped in salt were once used to brighten copper and brass fittings, a trick that still brings back the shine on old kettles, doorknobs, and ornaments found in many Kiwi homes.

For wooden furniture, a soft cloth with a touch of olive oil can restore some warmth and shine to dull surfaces, much like our grandparents did before modern polishes became common.

These traditional methods are especially handy for those managing on a fixed income or wanting to avoid strong chemical smells in the home. Many senior New Zealanders also appreciate that these cleaning tricks use items already sitting in the pantry, saving unnecessary trips to the shops.

While new products certainly have their place, there is real value in returning to these simple, tried and tested methods. They connect us to a time when resourcefulness mattered, and they prove that effective cleaning does not need to be complicated or expensive.

Next time you are tidying up the house, consider reaching for vinegar, baking soda, or a lemon instead of a shop-bought spray. These old-fashioned cleaning tricks have stood the test of time for good reason, and they might just become your new favourites too.
