If you were suddenly unable to use your phone, would someone else know who to call?

Most modern smartphones have emergency and medical information features that can be accessed without unlocking the device. They can display details such as an emergency contact, allergies, or other important information, depending on what you choose to provide.

The exact options differ between iPhones and Android phones, but the principle is the same: make useful information available from the lock screen without exposing everything else on your phone.

Start by adding an emergency contact. Choose someone who is likely to answer and knows how to reach other members of your family. It is worth asking that person first rather than adding their number without telling them.

You can also look at the medical information your phone allows you to store. Keep it concise and relevant. Important allergies, significant medical conditions, or other information that could affect emergency care may be useful. Do not treat the phone as a replacement for proper medical records, but it can provide a quick reference when time matters.

Make sure you understand what information will actually be visible from the locked screen. This is important for privacy. You want to make useful emergency information accessible without accidentally displaying more personal information than you intended.

Then test the feature. You do not need to call emergency services. Simply check the emergency or medical information option from your locked phone and confirm that the details are accurate.

This is particularly worth doing after changing your phone number, replacing an emergency contact or moving to a new area. An old contact who no longer answers the phone is not much help in an emergency.

It takes only a few minutes to set up, and you may never need it. But if someone finds your phone when you cannot explain who you are or who should be contacted, those few minutes of preparation could make a difficult situation much easier to manage.
