When people talk about saving money, the conversation usually focuses on emergencies. Building a financial safety net is certainly important, but it’s not the only reason to set money aside. Saving for enjoyable experiences can be just as valuable, particularly in later life when many people have more freedom to travel, explore new hobbies, or spend time with family.

Having a separate savings fund for leisure can make spending feel less stressful. Whether you’re planning a weekend away, buying a new camera, joining a gardening club, or taking the grandchildren out for the day, you’ll know the money has already been allocated for that purpose.

You don’t need to save large amounts to make it worthwhile. Putting aside a small, regular sum can gradually build into something meaningful. Even setting aside the cost of one takeaway meal or a few cups of coffee each week can make a difference over time.

Giving your savings a specific purpose can also help you stay motivated. A savings account labelled “South Island holiday,” “Family celebrations,” or “Photography equipment” often feels more rewarding than one simply called “Savings.” The clearer the goal, the easier it becomes to stay committed.

At the same time, remember to strike a balance. Looking after your future remains important, particularly when it comes to unexpected expenses. The aim isn’t to choose between responsibility and enjoyment. It’s to make room for both.

If you’re living on a fixed income, review your budget and look for small opportunities to redirect money towards experiences that genuinely bring you happiness. A little planning can create space for the things you value most.

Money is a tool. Its purpose isn’t simply to sit in a bank account. Used thoughtfully, it can help create opportunities, strengthen relationships, and support the experiences that make life richer and more memorable.
