Some of the busiest years of life are spent looking after everyone else. Work, children, ageing parents, and countless responsibilities often leave very little time for yourself. Even in retirement, it’s easy to fill the calendar with errands, appointments, and commitments until the days start feeling just as busy as before.

That’s why it’s worth setting aside an hour each week that’s entirely your own. The time doesn’t have to be productive. In fact, that’s the point. You might read a novel, sit in the garden with a cup of tea, browse a second-hand bookshop, visit an art gallery, or take a leisurely drive through the countryside. Choose something you enjoy simply because you enjoy it.

Treat this hour like any other important appointment. Write it in your diary and avoid the temptation to replace it with chores. The laundry will still be there tomorrow, and the emails can wait another hour.

If you share your home with a partner, encourage them to do the same. You don’t have to spend the hour together. Having separate interests and quiet time can be just as valuable as sharing activities, giving each of you the chance to recharge in your own way.

Over time, you may find yourself looking forward to this small pocket of the week. It becomes a chance to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the hobbies and interests that can easily be pushed aside by everyday life.

Giving yourself an hour each week to do something that brings you genuine enjoyment is a simple reminder that your time is valuable too. Those sixty minutes may not seem like much, but they can leave you feeling refreshed long after the hour is over.
