Listen to Your Toilet After You Flush

Most people flush the toilet and immediately move on. But the few seconds afterwards can tell you something useful about your plumbing. If you can still hear water running long after the cistern should have refilled, it may be time to investigate.
A toilet that makes a brief hiss before becoming quiet is usually nothing unusual. The problem is when you hear a constant trickle, intermittent running, or repeated refilling when nobody has used it. You might even notice the sound more clearly at night when the rest of the house is quiet.
There are several possible causes. A worn seal can allow water to escape from the cistern into the bowl, while a faulty fill valve may prevent the tank from shutting off properly. Sometimes the problem is as simple as a handle or button that is not returning to its normal position.
You do not always need to call a plumber immediately. First, take a look inside the cistern if it is accessible. Make sure the flush mechanism is moving freely and that nothing is catching or preventing the valve from closing. If you are unsure how the mechanism works, avoid forcing anything.
A simple way to spot a slow leak is to look at the water in the toilet bowl when nobody has used it for a while. Ripples or a faint trickling sound can indicate that water is continuing to enter the bowl. You can also put a few drops of food colouring into the cistern and wait without flushing. If the colour appears in the bowl, water is leaking through.
Do not ignore a small problem simply because the toilet still works. A leak that seems insignificant can continue around the clock, and a worn component may eventually fail completely. A plumber can identify the cause and replace the relevant part if it is beyond a straightforward adjustment.
It is also worth listening after other people use the bathroom. A toilet that behaves normally most of the time but keeps running after certain flushes may be giving you an early warning that something needs attention.
You do not need to become an expert in plumbing. Sometimes good household maintenance starts with something much simpler: noticing a sound that was not there before. The next time you flush, wait a moment before walking away. If the water keeps talking, your toilet may have something to say.
