One of the quieter changes that can come with getting older is watching your circle grow smaller.

Friends may relocate to be closer to family, move into retirement villages, or simply settle in different parts of the country. While it’s natural for life to take people in different directions, distance doesn’t have to mean the end of a meaningful friendship.

Keeping in touch is often easier than we imagine. A quick phone call, a handwritten card, or a simple text message can go a long way. Video calls are another great option, especially if you haven’t seen each other for a while. Seeing a familiar face and sharing a laugh can make the kilometres between you feel much shorter.

If you’re planning a holiday or passing through another town, consider arranging to meet up. It doesn’t have to be a grand occasion. A coffee, lunch, or walk together can strengthen a friendship that has lasted for years. Having something to look forward to also makes it more likely that you’ll stay in regular contact.

At the same time, don’t forget to invest in the friendships around you. Joining a local walking group, volunteering, attending community events, or taking a class can introduce you to people with similar interests. New friendships don’t replace old ones, but they can add richness and companionship to everyday life.

It’s also worth remembering that friendships don’t always need frequent conversations to remain strong. Some friends can pick up exactly where they left off, even after months apart. What matters most is making the effort to stay connected in whatever way works for both of you.

Good friendships deserve a little care, no matter the distance. A small message today could brighten someone else’s day just as much as your own.
