Families don’t always live around the corner anymore. It’s increasingly common for children and grandchildren to live in another city or even another country. While distance can make regular visits more difficult, it doesn’t have to weaken your relationship. With a little effort and creativity, it’s possible to remain an important part of your grandchildren’s lives.

Regular contact matters more than long conversations. A quick video call every Sunday, a short voice message, or a simple text asking how their week has been can help you stay connected. Younger children may only chat for a few minutes before running off to play, but those moments still help build familiarity and trust.

You can also share experiences, even when you’re apart. Read the same book and talk about it together, watch a favourite sporting event, or bake the same recipe in your own kitchens. These shared activities create memories that go beyond asking, “How was school?”

Don’t underestimate the value of traditional mail either. A handwritten birthday card, a postcard from your travels, or a letter with a family story tucked inside can become something your grandchildren keep for years. In a world of instant messages, receiving something addressed just to them feels special.

As grandchildren grow older, their interests will change. Teenagers may not have as much time to chat, but they still appreciate knowing you’re interested in their lives. Ask about their hobbies, part-time job, sport, or future plans rather than expecting long conversations every time you speak.

If you’re able to visit, focus on spending quality time together rather than filling every hour with activities. Some of the best memories come from everyday moments, such as cooking dinner together, playing cards, or going for a walk. These simple experiences often leave a lasting impression.

Distance may separate you, but staying connected is something you can continue to nurture for years to come.
